Millennium Development Goals
The
UN Millennium Declaration and its MDGs are an important point of
reference for German Development Cooperation. The MDGs provide the
orientation and yardsticks for the policy of the German Federal
Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). They have
tremendous importance for all German Development Cooperation, and
accordingly for GTZ.
In its Action Programme 2015 the German Federal Government describes
the German contribution and approaches to implementing the
Millennium Declaration. The programme emphasises poverty reduction
as the key task for German development policy.
Like the BMZ, GTZ sees the Millennium Declaration and its four key
objectives as the reference framework for its work. Projects and
programmes embedded in the environment of our partner countries play
a decisive role in achieving the MDGs for the long term by changing
structures in the developing countries. The capacity development
approach offers advice to state institutions on e.g. more
effectively combating corruption, improving public services or
strengthening human rights. These measures contribute towards
improving the circumstances of the poor population in a country.
In its work, GTZ contributes to achieving the MDGs. Numerous
projects in the health and education sector make a direct
contribution, for example by reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS by
providing advisory services and contraceptives. Economic promotion
and infrastructural measures aiming at increasing economic growth
and reducing poverty are another important contribution towards
achieving the MDGs – and especially in cities, which are growing by
around 180,000 people every day. Cities too will be decisive for
determining our success in achieving the UN Millennium Development
Goals. "Focus – Fascination – Future. Designing tomorrow's cities"
has therefore been chosen as GTZ's annual theme 2005. |
