Opening of the new Customer Service Centre in Hodeidah: Better services in a better environment

The Hodeidah Water and Sanitation Local Corporation inaugurated its new Customer Service Centre on January 24th, 2011. The inauguration took place in the presence of the Governor of the Hodeidah Governorate (also Chairman of the Board of Hodeidah Water and Sanitation LC), the Deputy Minister in charge of Water Affairs (Ministry of Water and Environment), the General Manager of the Hodeidah Water and Sanitation Local Corporation and the Head of the GIZ Water Sector Program.

With a large support of the GIZ Water Sector Program (OMS Project, implemented by Dorsch International Consultants), the Hodeidah Water and Sanitation LC has developed improved internal procedures to deal more efficiently with the needs of their customers. In parallel, they have developed the new Customer Service Centre, in which water users will be guided through the steps they have to follow in their communication with the utility. A request for new connection, for example, will now only require 2 different steps from the customer, and the new connection will be established in a much shorter time. Hodeidah is now second in the country, after the Ibb Water and Sanitation LC, to be equipped with a modern and customer-friendly service centre, an example which can be followed throughout Yemen.

The OMS project aims at developing improved business procedures in Yemeni water utilities by making use of an up-to-date GIS (Geographical Information System), new equipment and a thorough review and update of business practices. The project aims at improving customer management and operation and maintenance of the physical assets. The outcomes are mainly for the utility to be more efficient technically and financially, and for the customers to receive better services.
