GTZ IWRM – a key supporter for the Amran Basin
Water Management Committee
Under the auspices of the Governor of Amran,
Kahlan Mujahid Abu Shawarib, and chaired by the Deputy Governor
for Water and Environment, Baker Ali Baker, the Amran Basin
Water Management Committee held its inaugural meeting on
Tuesday, October 28, 2008.
In his opening address, the deputy governor stressed the crucial
role and support of GTZ in establishing the committee, whose
members include the governor and deputy governor, heads of
district local councils and water sector entities, as well as
farmers.
This was followed by a presentation about the critical water
resource situation in the basin from Amin al-Mashriqi, Director
of the NWRA Sana’a/Amran branch. GTZ IWRM’s senior advisor,
Nasser Muhammad Nasser then informed the 21-member committee
about their mandate, responsibilities and working procedures.
GTZ will support the Amran Basin Committee in a tailor-made
training program offered by-weekly over a period of four months.
Topics range from basic hydrological concepts and water law to
public participation and groundwater management. Upon
completion, basin committee members will be awarded a
certificate on integrated water resources management (IWRM).
The start of the committee coincides with the final draft of the
water management action plan for the basin, likewise supported
by the German Technical Cooperation.
