Official inauguration of the NWRA-Abyan-Unit

On June 16th 2008 the NWRA-Unit Abyan was officially opened by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Mr. Michael Klor-Berchtold. The Delegation opening the Unit contained his Excellency the Minister of Water and Environment Abdul Rahman Al Eryani, and the Governor of Abyan Ahmed Bin Ahmed Al Meisari, the Vice Governor, the vice chairman of NWRA Mr Abullah Al-Thary, the General Director of the NWRA Tuban-Abyan Branch, representatives of the newly established Water Basin Committee in Abyan and Representatives of the gtz-IWRM component of the Yemeni-German Water Sector Program.
The opening of the Unit was followed by a field trip to Bateis in the north of Delta Abyan to visit the newly established and finalized work on three wells to provide the water protection zone No. one which protects the well from direct contamination by backflow of any contaminant into the well.
It was announced that the rehabilitation of the canal irrigation system is of upmost importance to develop a sound water resources management plan for the Abyan Delta. It was also mentioned, that all Governorates sharing the same water catchment area in the upstream of the Wadi Bana should come together to agree on a common understanding on how to manage the water resources of the Wadi Bana which is the “water tap” for the Abyan Delta.
