NEWS - April 2010 Yemeni-German Water Program celebrates the
World Water Day
Every
year, on 22 March, the National Water Resources Authority (NWRA)
celebrates the World Water Day. For 2010 Taiz, Yemen’s second
largest city, was selected to host the annual ceremony. It was
attended by the Minister of Water and Environment, the Governors
of Taiz and Ibb in addition to representatives of government and
donor organizations.
To make it a success, GTZ’s Water
Sector Program, represented by components 2 and 4 provided the
technical support needed to organize the festival. In addition,
GTZ supplied water-related awareness materials, posters and
brochures.
During
the event, cloth carrier bags, designed and funded by GTZ, were
distributed to all the participants. The bags portray Rawian,
NWRA’s mascot and, besides being environmentally friendly, many
commented on their effectiveness to raise awareness on water
issues. The Governor of Taiz even suggested producing these bags
commercially. For its part, DED supplied a set of brochures
and cooperated in the organization of the event. BGR and CIM
participated in producing a banner explaining the German
organizations’ support to the water sector.
In
addition, Component 4 supported NWRA to produce an awareness
play addressing groundwater issues. It was applauded by all and
described as a distinct contribution compared to productions
staged during previous World Water Days.
In Abyan
Governorate, Component 4 supported the World Water Day through
organizing a number of awareness-raising activities such as
cleaning the irrigation canals and contests.
