World Water Day 2011 in Abyan
Despite
the difficult security circumstances in the region, Abyan
insisted to celebrate the World Water Day. Abyan Water Basin
Committee with the support of giz- Decentralized Water Resources
Management component organized two activities to be carried out
during 21st – 23rd March 2011 in the Abyan delta.
The first
activity was to clean 5 irrigation channels of the irrigation
scheme of the Abyan Delta during 21-22 March 2011. Five water
user associations participated in the activity by getting rid of
soil and trees that are stuck in the channels. The total number
of participants was 75 including some students.
The
second activity was a 2 days’ workshop on drip irrigation for
banana cultivation held on 22- 23 March, 2011. More than 140
including farmers from different areas of the Abyan delta,
members of agricultural associations, women sectors, local
authority and the members of Abyan WBC participated at the
workshop. During this workshop, feedback was given of the field
visit of some farmers and other farms’ owners from the Abyan
Delta to Tihama- Al Hodeidah to closely see the banana crops
farms that are already using drip irrigation. The result showed
the successes of this irrigation technique in reducing the cost
of production and improving the quality of the crops.
